General Information

Term Dates for the year 2008/2009 are as follows:

Autumn Term 2011 - 26 September - 17 December (12 weeks)
Spring Term 2012 - 9 January - 31 March (12 weeks)
Summer Term 2012

- 23 April - 17 July (12 weeks)
Closed on Monday 7 May, 4 June & Tuesday 5 June

Enquiries
The Centre is open for enquiries from 10.00-20.00 weekdays and 10.00-17.00 Saturdays during term time, and from 9.30-17.00 Monday to Friday throughout the summer vacation.

Advice and Guidance
Our job is to help you choose the right course and to do this you will need good impartial information and advice. Please see the Student Advice section below for details.

Enrolment Information
Please enrol early to avoid disappointment. We are happy to give you advice over the phone should you need it. Should your preferred class be full please give your contact details on a waiting list and we will contact you if we can subsequently offer you a place.

Enrolment by Post, Fax and Web
If you do not need advice and know which course you wish to join please enrol by post to the Mary Ward Centre, 42 Queen Square, London WC1N 3AQ, or by fax 020 7269 6002. Secure web enrolment is via this website but only for full fee payers as, where concessions are claimed, proof of entitlement must be provided before you can enrol.

Enrolment by Telephone
If you have a credit/debit card and you are a full fee payer, you may enrol by phone: 020 7269 6000 but, if you do not need individual advice, you may find that enrolling by post, fax or on the web provides a quicker service during busy periods.

Enrolment in Person
During term time personal enrolment is:
Monday to Friday, 10.00-20.00
Saturday, 10.00-16.00
Enrolment for English classes is only in person, on the special advice days and times shown on the English pages of this site.

Fees
Fees are shown in the individual course entries and depend on the length and cost of running the course and the level of subsidy. It is possible to pay by instalment, where this is indicated in the prospectus, and for year long courses which may be paid for termly.

Concessionary fees are available as shown in the course entry if you are:
  • in receipt of Job Seeker's allowance
  • asylum seeker receiving a means tested benefit
  • in receipt of Working Tax Credit, where the household income is less than £15,050 per annum
  • in receipt of Incapacity Benefit
  • in receipt of other income based benefit
  • unwaged and dependent on somebody in the above categories
  • over 60 with sole or main source of income a state pension
  • low waged with proof via payslips of income of £90 per week or less (University Extra-Mural courses only)
  • registered unemployed but not in receipt of benefit

    Evidence of entitlement must be produced before the enrolment is processed. Please supply a photocopy if not enrolling in person. Note: If you are over 16 and under 19 years on 31 August in the calendar year in which your course starts and enrolling for LSC funded courses i.e. not 'U' suffix courses, you can enrol for nil tuition fee.

    Overseas Students
    Fees for overseas students, who are not eligible for funding by the Learning and Skills Council, are twice the standard fee. Please contact reception for further information.

    Can't afford to study?
    You may be eligible for some financial help towards the costs of your studies. Here are some of the ways in which we have been able to help those on low incomes.

  • Reduced course fees
  • Travelling expenses to and from the Centre
  • Materials and equipment e.g. books, art materials
  • Examination fees for accredited courses e.g. Computing
  • Childcare with registered childminders.

    Changes in the advertised programme
    We may change or add to the courses advertised, for instance where a course is over or under subscribed, or where there is a change in personnel or resources. Students’ interests are taken into consideration where a change is made. A refund is offered if the change is not accepted.

    Visitors' Passes
    If there are vacancies in a class, we permit students to attend one meeting to assess the suitability of a course before enrolling. This facility is not available for computing courses or courses of less than four meetings. Ask at Reception.

    University of London Extra-Mural Courses
    Birkbeck run some classes at the Mary Ward Centre. To enrol on these courses, please call Birkbeck on 020 7631 6651, or enrol online at www.bbk.ac.uk/ce. For advice on these courses, call 020 7631 6669/6665
