Art by offenders from HMP Belmarsh – 2012.

The work currently on show, at the Mary Ward Centre, is from students who attended art classes in the education department at Belmarsh over the last year. We run sessions every day for learners of all levels and experiences – for many it is the first time back in a classroom setting for several years.

We try to keep the atmosphere as relaxed as possible, given where we are, and I like to think that the learners are able to cut off from their surroundings for the few hours they are in the room. The class isn’t just about forgetting though, it is about learning new skills and unlocking minds. I feel that the class gets the learners to think and look at themselves more – and reflect on how their work will be interpreted by you. This is a crucial step for offenders to make as they have, in the past, failed to consider the effect of their actions on others.

Many of the pieces are for sale and realistic offers will be considered. If you are interested in purchasing any of the artwork please leave your details at reception with a brief description of the work you are interested in together with its location (e.g. café or nearest room number etc.). Of the proceeds, 60% go to the artist with 40% going back into the education dept. to subsidize materials. Please give generously – cuts to funding are having a massive impact on Arts provision in Offender Learning and there is a very real danger that the class could soon close.

On a positive note, the work is of a very high standard this year, and I hope you enjoy viewing the work as much as I find teaching the classes at Belmarsh rewarding.
