Adult learners are as varied as society itself. They are of all ages, sexes and background and so there are no stereotypes. All can learn and all can find fellowship at Mary Ward. The student profile page brings together the words and experiences of some of our students.
Azar I am a student of adult literacy, French and life drawing. Studying at the Centre has transformed my educational life, benefiting me beyond my imagination. I feel uplifted to be here, because of the teaching and teaching methods. I also feel secure here; I like the building and the area, and without this security, I would not have come to the Centre. Johanna I have been attending evening and weekend classes at the Mary Ward Centre for about 25 years. Since my retirement I have been very grateful for the low fees and the very real welcome the Centre extends to older people. I now enjoy fitness classes, specifically adapted for seniors, and have found a new interest in the marvellous series of philosophy classes and debates.
Miguel I am currently studying Herbalism, Counselling and Drawing. I like the fact that it’s a small College where classes are run in a pleasant and cosy Georgian building. Staff are very helpful and polite and they give us the feeling that we are at home. The tutors are excellent, helping us to develop in a supportive and constructive way. The café serves healthy yet delicious food including mouth watering Portuguese cakes!
Molly I am now studying at Camberwell College of Art, and still keep in touch with the Mary Ward Centre. The Access into Art course provided me with the opportunity to fulfil my potential in the arena of art at a late stage in my life. The caring attitude and interest of the staff extends towards their ex students. Today I have my first solo art exhibition at the Centre.
Nasreen The exceptional standards of teaching and support on the Child Care and Crèche work course have enabled me to work towards becoming a qualified Early Years teacher. The teacher has been an inspiration to me. As a parent of two young children I would recommend this course to anybody interested in working with children, or learning how to be a better parent. The course really makes you look at children in a different way.
Pam I have learnt new computer skills, which has increased my confidence. Apart from benefiting from learning, I have also made new friends. ‘There’s Something About Mary’ (Ward) that is special. In fact it can become rather addictive and hard to give up! This is something that I have never experienced in other colleges.
