Who is this course for
The qualification provides an introduction for those new to teaching and training or those wishing to teach or train. It is designed as a qualification which will equip a wide range of teachers and facilitators with a 'threshold license to teach'.
Candidates should be adequately qualified/ in the subject they intend to teach by virtue of holding an appropriate professional or other qualification.
Candidates also have an initial assessment of literacy, numeracy and ICT needs and, in consultation with course tutors, need to plan to address any perceived needs in these areas. A good level of literacy is required at the outset of the course to ensure candidates' ability to complete written assignment work.
What does this course cover
The qualification is designed to enable candidates to:
- adopt an integrated approach to the theory and practice of teaching
- reflect on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and areas for development
- identify principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation
- develop communication and inter-personal skills
- develop an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities.
The Course includes the following sections:
- Tutors role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
- Teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
- Session planning skills
- How to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners
- The use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping
Additional Saturday Spring course: 24 March 2018, 10.00-16.30
Additional Saturday Summer course: 14 July 2018, 10.00-16.30
What will it be like
Lecture, pair and group work, video, presentations, micro-teaching observations
Initial Assessment: Students must fill in an application form and attend an interview to ensure their suitability for the course.
Ongoing assessment: There will be regular assignments and reflective journals to be completed throughout the course. Each assignment will be graded pass or refer.
Final assessment: Students' work should be presented in a portfolio containing the assignments and reflective journals, completed during the course. Each section within the qualification will be holistically assessed by two City & Guilds assignments, marked internally by the Mary Ward Centre.
What else do you need to buy or do
A comprehensive reading list will be given to students
Handouts will also be provided during the course.
Students will need to provide a large folder, paper, pens
Students will be given a reading list and regular assignments to complete, with deadlines to follow. You will be expected to do at least 5 hours of theoretical study each week.
What this course could lead to
This is the entry qualification which allows progression to further teacher training courses.
On successful completion, students can work as a qualified tutor
