Beginners IT Skills

If you are not sure about where to start this is the starter course for students with little or no previous experience of computers. An essential course for newcomers to computers and useful for those with some knowledge to ensure control when using the computer. It introduces the basic features of Windows and Microsoft Office: managing files, beginning word processing, using the internet and email.

Who is this course for

No previous knowledge of computing is required. You may wish to repeat this course.

Please note that if you are more than 30 minutes late for your course the tutor can not let you start as it disrupts the learning of other students. Also if you enrol on this course that attendance is required or others are denied a place.

What does this course cover

For students who may have little or no experience of computing. Provides an opportunity for guided 'hands-on' experience on how to use computer, mouse, keyboard and printer. Emphasis is on what the various computer programs can do. The tutors are specially chosen to provide everyday words and with a sympathetic approach.
Main functions and parts of a computer; Using mouse and keyboard; Starting Windows; Games; Paint; Controlling windows; Switching programs; Shutdown; Help; Introduction to wordprocessing with Word; Saving files; changing text; Printing; File managing including folders; System settings; Introduction to the Internet; Introduction to email.

What will it be like

Demonstration using Smartboard through computer-linked projectors, exposition and discussion. One-to-one and Group work. Through tutor-guidance and hands-on experience, the completion of the course objectives.
Ongoing monitoring of students' work including questions, observation and tasks. Start and End of class student self-assessment/achievement tick sheet.

What else do you need to buy or do

Materials are supplied free of charge by the Centre.
As much practice as possible to reinforce learning. This may be at home or elsewhere or from homework given by the tutor.

What this course could lead to

A short qualification course, the CLAIT/ITQ Level 1 Award.
