Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)

Almost all universities in the UK and over 6000 educational institutions, businesses and government departments around the world accept Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) as proof of competence in English. So, for ESOL students with a good level of English who wants to study or work in the language, this course is invaluable. It will prepare you for the exam and at the same time develop your language skills for a variety of situations in everyday life, work and study. You will
be advised on where you can take the test. Exam fee is not included.
It is possible to combine this with Pronunciation or
Read, Write and Study Well courses.
Who is this course for
This course is at an advanced level. It is for ESOL students at L2 or above and corresponds to C1 on the Common European Framework (CEFR).
It is the right course for you if want a qualification to demonstrate to employers, colleges and universities around the world that have achieved a high level of English. You will already have a very good level of English in all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Preparing for this qualification will help you develop these, learn more about how to write academically and formally, improve your accuracy and refine your ability to use the right language in the right situation.
What does this course cover
This course will cover all four parts of the CAE exam.
Reading and Use of English - how to deal confidently with different types of text, such as fiction, newspapers and magazines and how to use English with a high level of sophistication in grammar and vocabulary.
Writing - how to create essays, letters, emails, proposals, reports and reviews. You will practise achieving the actual task (doing what you were asked to do), using appropriate register and vocabulary, organising the writing and using a range of grammar and vocabularly.
Listening - how to follow and understand a range of spoken materials, such as interviews, radio broadcasts, presentations, talks and everyday conversations. You will practise listening for the gist of a whole extract, for specific information, and for the speaker's opinion, attitude or feeling.
Speaking - how to communicate effectively in face-to-face situations. You will practise your grammar and pronunciation, develop your use of vocabulary, and work on your ability to organise your thoughts, initiate and maintain a discussion, and reach a decision through negotiation.
What will it be like
The teacher will use videos, YouTube, stories, pictures, recordings and an electronic whiteboard to introduce language. You will read a lot of different texts and you will do many varied activities to ensure you are developing all aspects of your language. You will work in groups, pairs and on your own. You will discuss many topics, practise formal and informal conversations and work on various tasks to encourage you to communicate fully.
The teacher will assess your speaking, listening, reading and writing by giving you activities to do and some tests. The tutor will talk regularly to you about your progress and what you need to do in order to improve.
The teacher will use past exam papers to ensure you are familiar with the format of the qualification.
What else do you need to buy or do
You need an A4 file, paper, pens and pencils. An advanced English-English dictionary and a thesaurus are also useful.
You need to keep a file with all your work in and you need to do homework to ensure you progress as well as you can.
What this course could lead to
This course will prepare you for the Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) exam . You do not take the exam at Mary Ward Centre and the exam fee is not included in the course.
You may decide to study Pronunciation alongside or after this course.
