Cubist Collage And Drawing

Inspired by the paintings of Picasso and Braque and by the drawings of Ben Nicholson we will draw, cut and recombine line and colour and pattern to make cubist collage.

Who is this course for

This Course is for anyone with a love of mixed media collage or for anyone who would like to try it for the first time. Beginners are welcome and will work alongside the more experienced learners.

What does this course cover

During this short Course we will look at the work of Ben Nicholson, Picasso and Braque and we will draw and collage elements from a large stilllife of objects. We will use observational drawing skills and we will cut and tear coloured and patterned paper in order to translate what we see onto the page.

By the end of the Course students will have experienced various ways to translate what they see into 2D and will have learned to overlay media. Students will have a basic understanding of the principles of cubism.

What will it be like

Students will be shown examples of artists work. Students will be given group instruction as well as individual teaching and support. There will also be some demonstration of technique. We will assess progress through group critique.

What else do you need to buy or do

Students should bring a variety of media if they have it - oil pastels and acrylic paints will be most useful. Paper and charcoal will be provided. Students should bring collage material. Students are not expected to do extra study/practice outside the class though a familiarity with cubism might be useful.

What this course could lead to

This course will help to hone observational drawing skills as well as an ability to recognise tonal values in colour. This Course would be a good precursor to any painting course.
