Drawing: Absolute Beginners
Learn the basics of drawing using various media. Building your skills and confidence, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The course will include mark making and composition, the use of line, tone, perspective, and compositional organisation. The third term will meet for 2 weeks at the Mary Ward Centre followed by drawing offsite for the rest of the term.
Who is this course for
This course is for anyone wanting to explore the art of drawing in a friendly and accessible atmosphere. Beginners very welcome! No previous knowledge or experience necessary.
What does this course cover
The course will include mark making and composition. Beginners will learn to draw using basic shapes to create complex drawings. Students will also learn use of line, tone, perspective, and compositional organization. We will examine the use of space and light, composition, and colour.
There will be an opportunity to pursue your own subject interests in drawing and you are encouraged to bring resource materials for your own use.
We will be using pencils, pens, coloured pencils, wax crayons, and paint crayons with water pens. Unfortunately, we will not be able to use raw paint, charcoal or pastels as we will be based in the music room.
We will also be looking at the work of other artists.
What will it be like
There will be group and one-to-one tuition and projects will normally last 2-3 weeks with some single session projects. There will be at least one visit to a museum each term.
Each week the tutor will introduce the subject of the lesson with a video and/or demonstration and PowerPoint presentation followed by individual guidance and support.
There will be a 15 minute 'gallery' at the end of each lesson where each student can show their work for feedback in the form of constructive criticism from the tutor and other students. There will also be an opportunity to show your work in an exhibition at the centre.
What else do you need to buy or do
A short list of necessary materials will be issued at the start of the course with an estimate of the overall cost. You should not need to spend more than £20-30 depending on the quality of materials you wish to use.
What this course could lead to
Join other Art classes at Mary Ward Centre and elsewhere. There is an accredited programme of art Pre-foundation and Foundation Access to HE at Mary Ward Centre.
Incorporate drawing practice into further desired art activity and projects. For example, build sketchbooks into a visual life-diary!
