What will it be like

Each student will be expected to keep a notebook/sketchbook and record of work in progress both as a source of imagination and ideas and as an aid to the self-assessment process.

A digital camera is available for photographing work in progress. In a class of mixed abilities and projects, the tuition is more often than not one-to-one, and consequently students will be expected to be self reliant and patient at times until their needs can be attended to.

Students will be expected to take detailed notes on processes so that they can be accurately repeated. A sketch book/ notebook will be a great asset in the process of self assessment. Students will appreciate that in a class of mixed abilities and projects, the tuition is more often than not one to one and consequently students will be expected to be self reliant and patient until such time as their needs can be attended to. More experienced students will be encouraged to help and advise the less experienced.

Students will be encouraged to analyse, interpret, appraise and evaluate their own work. This may take the form of a group discussion or individual consultation with the tutor or fellow students. Assessments are geared to meet individual needs as appropriate.

What else do you need to buy or do

You will need to buy very little as we will be sourcing natural and sustainable materials such as Wood, Soapstone or Clunch from indigenous or local sources wherever possible.
We will also recycle materials such Clay, Papier mache' and explore the use of found objects and scrap.

Students are encouraged to keep a record of their progress and achievement in the form of a blog, and will assist with setting one up if students have not used this process before.

What this course could lead to

Past students have progressed to exhibiting and selling their work. At the end of the year we usually have a student exhibition. The exhibition is open to all and is a great opportunity to show and possibly sell your work.

Many students have successfully applied for and completed degree courses in sculpture and art and design.

Students can also take accredited courses at Mary Ward Centre, including Pre-foundation/ Foundation into Art and Advanced Practice for Artists and Designers course.
