English – Read, Write and Study Well Level 1

Do you find writing difficult? Not know what to write? Repeat yourself again and again? Aimed at ESOL students this course will help you improve your writing and show you how to read in order to write. You will learn how to decide what to read, take notes from your reading and also structure your notes. Then you can focus on your writing how to begin, how to write clearly, how to link your paragraphs and sentences, how to end. This approach can apply to different types of writing and will be useful to you in your work, studies and everyday life. It will also be very beneficial if you wish to do Cambridge Advanced English, prepare for university or progress quickly on your general ESOL course.

Who is this course for

This is the right course for you if are finding it difficult to make progress. Very often students 'get stuck' because their study skills are not good enough. To learn a language you need to know how to write and read well. You need to know how to organise your reading and writing, how to write a paragraph, and how to decide what to read and write. Learning these skills is very important especially if you do not write a lot in your daily life. As you learn these skills, you will see your English improve, especially in your formal language including speaking. If these are the skills you need to improve, this is the course for you. The term one course is for Level 1 students. The term two course is for Level 2 students.

What does this course cover

You will learn how to structure your writing. The main focus will be on writing in which you have to give your opinions on a topic. But many of the skills you need for this apply to other types of writing e.g. writing reports, letters and so on. You will learn how to decide what to include in your writing, what you should read in order to answer a question, how to make notes and order them, how to begin and end your writing, how to write a paragaph and link your ideas.

What will it be like

The course will be creative, dynamic and enjoyable. The teacher will provide you with a topic or a question for you to research and write about. You will work on your own and with other students, with a lot of help from the tutor. The process of reading and writing will be broken down into small parts to make it easier for you. The reading will always relate to your writing. There will be a lot of discussion about stimulating and interesting topics.

What else do you need to buy or do

You will need to do homework. The course will be better for you if you can use a computer. You need to bring a folder to organise your papers.

What this course could lead to

ESOL and English Literature would be a good course to do next for the level 2 students.
