Exercise For Better Balance

Is your balance as good as it used to be? Can you still stand on one leg without swaying?
What happens when you close your eyes? The gradual loss of our sense of balance can catch us
unawares. The ageing process, injury and inactivity can all contribute. This course will introduce you to
exercise to help you on the path to better balance.

Who is this course for

No previous experience needed. However, the level of this course is suitable for people who are able sit, stand and walk unaided without pain for the duration of the class. If you are not able to do this then a chair based or a physiotherapist supervised exercise programme is more likely to meet your needs. Similarly, if your sense of balance is currently affected by dizziness or vertigo please consult your GP for advice. If you have any serious health issues, please seek the approval of a health professional to check this course is suitable for you.
There will be the option to use the wall or chair for support for some of the exercises.

What does this course cover

This course will cover good posture, exercising safely, strengthening relevant muscles, increasing mobility and balance challenging activities.
By the end of the course you should be able to
- say how exercise can help enhance your sense of balance
- know how to stand with good posture to aid balance
- feel confident doing some relevant strengthening exercises
- safely practise some exercises that aid better balance

What will it be like

Tutor will be verbally and physically demonstrating the movements as the class join with her.
Tutor will be giving verbal feedback as well as visual feedback.
At the start: Tutor observes technique, student self assessment
On the course: Combination of instructor and student assessment on the techniques and moves.
At the end: As above

What else do you need to buy or do

Students need clothing they feel comfortable moving in and non-slip shoes with flexible soles. Some exercises will be done barefoot. Please avoid eating one and a half hours prior to exercising.
Once students are confident of their technique, they will be encouraged to practise some of the exercises at home to aid progress.

What this course could lead to

Continue with this course next term, trying more advanced options as your sense of balance increases. Try other exercise classes that challenge your balance or enhance your postural awareness and stability such as yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi.
