Introduction To Alexander Technique

Alexander Technique teaches us to develop a conscious awareness of how we are using our bodies. It enables us to rediscover the natural poise and balance we had as children, and learn to use our bodies according to their natural design, leading to less effort and muscular tension at work, rest and play. The Alexander Technique can have a positive impact on our general health and well-being.

Who is this course for

No previous experience is necessary. Alexander Technique teaches us to develop a conscious awareness of how we are using our bodies. When we learn to stop harmful habits and reactions, we are able to rediscover the natural poise and balance we had as children. This leads to less effort and muscular tension at work, rest and play. Alexander Technique lessons can have a very positive impact on our general health and well-being when we stop our habits of poor body-use and learn to use our bodies according to their natural design.

What does this course cover

- Students will be able to describe the basic principles of the Alexander Technique eg: inhibition, direction, non-doing and faulty sensory appreciation
- They will learn the Constructive Resting Position and be able to practise it at home
- They will be able to identify the habits of body-use that are affecting their performance, health and well-being. Eg In walking, sitting and standing, computing and writing.

What will it be like

Practical work with feedback and observations in pairs and in the group will be used to explore the basic principles of the Technique. Interactive games will also be used to emphasise the basic principles of the technque.

There will be handouts about the constructive resting position and other relevent information as well as advice about the next steps in taking the Technqiue further after the class finishes. Feedback from the students is welcomed and students will get feedback on their own habitual state to help them better understand their own body-use. Assessment is through checking understanding regularly and through the hands-on guidance from the tutor.

What else do you need to buy or do

You should wear loose comfortable clothing, please bring two or three medium sized paperback books and a blanket which will be used as head rests.

Students may want to take a Pilates class or further studies in Alexander Technique, tutor to advise
