Introduction To Repeat Patterns
Fun, practical introductory course covering the basics of repeat patterns using simple printing and drawing techniques. Suitable for all abilities and covers straight repeats, drop repeats and complex repeats.
Who is this course for
This course is for any student who is interested to find out about how to create repeat patterns for textile and surface design.
The course is suitable for complete beginners and students with a textile and / or design background. The patterns can also be applied to other surfaces, such as glass, ceramics and jewellery and the course is also suitable for students of those disciplines.
What does this course cover
The aim of the course is to go back to basics and to learn the skill of creating repeat patterns.
Even if you have a background in textile design, basic knowledge of how to build different types of repeat patterns is often not taught in any depth.
The course will be to teach you basic and advanced techniques in creating repeat patterns. This will include explaining straight repeats, drop repeats and complex repeats.
The day will be very practical and hands on, and all the work will be produced through drawing, painting and collaging onto paper.
We will start by drawing a basic pattern and build it up into a number of different repeats. We will use drawing, tracing paper, photocopiers, cutting and sticking to create the basic patterns, and painting or colouring in with pens to colour the final designs.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
Understand how to create repeat designs on paper
Understand different types of repeat designs
Feel confident to create your own repeat designs
Feel inspired to take you ideas forward

What else do you need to buy or do
You are encouraged to bring in: drawings/ sketches/ painting/ sketchbooks with ideas to work from.
Basic drawing materials will be provided but bring any materials that you like drawing with - such as pens, inks and watercolours.
