Jewellery: Etching Onto Metal

Short Jewellery course to learn surface decoration techniques of etching to create patterns and texture on metal. Using black and white images students will create designs for the 'photographic' etching process. This course is suitable for all levels of ability and complete beginners in jewellery. Experienced students can learn useful techniques as the etching process is a valuable technique for small batch production within the jewellery sector.

What does this course cover

Learn how to produce black and white images suitable for etching.
Produce etched designs in Metal.
Be able to use etching chemicals safely.

What will it be like

Group discussion, demonstration, task based practical work, one to one dialogue, handling samples and handouts.

Continual verbal guidance and feedback, group and individual discussion and observation of practical work produced.

What else do you need to buy or do

Copper and/or brass sheet 0.9 to 1.2mm thick approximately 70 x 70mm would be advantageous for learners wishing to produce extra pieces. Some sheet metal will be provided.

Black and white copyright free images (no grey tones) to use for your own texture and patterned designs.

What this course could lead to

This skill can be practiced within any art studio or workshop environment. Progression onto a range of art, craft and design courses at Mary Ward Centre, accredited, non accredited and professional development courses.
