Jewellery Making Projects

Learn to experiment and broaden your craft, design and make new and exciting jewellery pieces out of a variation of materials.

Who is this course for

This course will give you the possibility to create new and exciting jewellery pieces and 3D objects out of a variation of materials. You will experiment and broaden your creative skills through trying out new ways of making jewellery and related objects.

This is a course for students with some experience in jewellery making.
The course could also be used by students who wish to apply for a degree in jewellery design and wish to develop ideas outside their portfolio.
On this course you will explore new design and styles through making jewellery and small objects/sculptures. You will be encouraged to develop a sense for design and style and how to explore new ideas in jewellery making.

What does this course cover

On This course you will try to create unconventional exiting pieces of jewellery and 3D objects and experiment with materials.
You will also be looking at all types of contemporary jewellery.
You will learn how to develop your design ideas through a series of exercises with different materials and different approaches to designing.
You also will be encouraged to expand and broaden your responses in Jewellery/3D via direct observation and experimenting with materials.

What you should be able to do by the end of the course
1. make one or more pieces of contemporary jewellery / 3D objects
2. Have the ability to develop ideas and concepts
3. Develop your research skills
4. To have a working knowledge of several materials
5. Have evaluative skills in relation to your own and others' work

What will it be like

The teaching and learning methods we use on the course;
One to one dialogue, group discussion, tutor example, explanation and demonstration.

How we assess your progress on the course;
Continuous evaluation is an integral part of the course. This is achieved through one-to-one discussion between tutor and student and group discussions.

What extra study/practice we expect you to do outside the class;
Continually looking at all kinds of jewellery, art and design objects as well as drawing their ideas i.e. keeping a sketchbook or scrapbook

What else do you need to buy or do

Base metals, a range of materials and tools are provided.
Silver and any other materials you wish to use. You will be given notes of where to buy all these, cost varies on project undertaken.
Students will also need a sketchbook and notebook, basic art equipment.
Specialist materials will have to be provided by the students cost varies on project undertaken.
Closed shoes need to be worn at all times when participating in a jewellery class.

What this course could lead to

A Foundation course in Art & Design, Continue with intermediate jewellery classes. Related classes such as Sculpture or design at The Mary Ward Centre or elsewhere, Access into Art or Pre-foundation Art and Design.
