Who is this course for

Anyone who wants to paint and draw one or all of the three subjects: Landscape / Still life / Portrait. This course is suitable for beginners and those who have experience, for those that draw who want to paint and those who paint who lack confidence in drawing. It is a course for those wishing to create a portfolio or have an exhibition.

What does this course cover

Term 1: The course is designed to teach fundamental skills in drawing and painting and to develop different approached to creating compositions of the three subjects. In a 12 week term the course will divide into three sections where each subject is explored in tone and colour for 4 weeks. Students will work from observation, drawings, photographs or collage to create images that will lead to a finished composition.

Term 2 & Term 3: Will consolidate and continue the approach defined in Term 1 and students can choose to concentrate on just one or two subjects. New students can join in these terms. If a student wants to concentrate on one or two subjects in the first term, this is possible. The tutor will discuss these matters with students during the first session each term.

Develop their drawing and painting skills including working in black and white, line and tone, colour mixing, glazing and impasto, proportion, scale and measurement. Develop the ability to explore their ideas from a wide range of sources and experiences. Which will give them confidence to work on their own projects. Demonstrate a knowledge of other artists work and be able to discuss with others their understanding of drawing and painting.
Students will learn how to look critically at artwork.

What will it be like

The tutor talks to the group initiating the projects through question and answer sessions at the beginning of term. There will be specific demonstrations and tutor-led initiatives (provision of subject matter) during the term. Students will work as a group on some projects and individually.
Initially there will be group discussions and questionnaires. Students will use self-assessment forms and individual assessments will be provided by the tutor. Formally (written assessments) and informally (discussion while working on projects)

What else do you need to buy or do

Students can use a range of materials of their choice. Drawing materials: pencil, charcoal, conte, pastels. Painting materials: watercolour, gouache, acrylics, oils maximum cost of materials £25 - £35.
Drawing surfaces and painting surfaces students will be advised. Paper is provided. Drawing materials will be available the first week of term if students do not have materials.
