Who is this course for
A workshop with an emphasis on building skills, sharing work and supporting other students.
This course is perfect for those who have always wanted to develop their creative writing, but for one reason or another have never got around to it.
It is suitable for anyone with a desire to write and who would like to make progress in a specific direction, whether that is in short stories or a more sustained piece of prose.
Students should have fluency in written English.
The course is suitable for beginners or those with a little experience.
What does this course cover
Students will be introduced to various aspects of the craft.
1) Develop skills in creating character. 2) Develop skills in creating structure. 3) Improve ability to transform life into fiction. 4) Improve ability to receive and deliver supportive feedback.
Students are encouraged to develop confidence in their writing abilities, to find their own 'voice'. The atmosphere will be supportive and encouraging, with helpful feedback from the tutor and the group.
What will it be like
The course runs in two six-week blocks each term. You'll learn a lot from one block, but it's recommended to attend both if you can.
Writing exercises will be set for stimuli, and discussion in class. Homework assignments will be provided, but students are free to choose their own writing path. There will be plenty of opportunity for sharing work.
Work is read out in class and there is an emphasis on developing skills in constructive, helpful and supportive feedback. Students also regularly assess their own learning and progress throughout the term.
What else do you need to buy or do
Pen and paper.
Students are expected to find time each week for writing. For those want it, specific homework will be set.
