Life Drawing: Composition

This is a two day workshop that allows students of all abilities to think about ways to draw the model as a part of a larger composition.

Who is this course for

This class is for all levels of ability. It will allow beginners to think about fundamental ideas such as how to place a figure within a space, and advanced students will be able to experiment with design ideas that will hopefully push their work into having more compositional power.

What does this course cover

A three day workshop that will allow students to think about ways to draw the model as part of a composition. We will look at examples by Rubens, Titian, Cezanne and Poussin, and how these artists use interconnected poses and movement to create a flow across the overall scene.

What will it be like

Each day a model will perform multiple poses throughout the day. Each pose will connect and compliment the next. Students will first have an opportunity to draw all the poses quickly and work out their composition. They will then have the rest of the day to work on a longer picture.

What else do you need to buy or do

Basic materials are provided (with higher quality paper available to buy in class), students wishing to use oils on canvas will need to provide their own materials and adhere to health and safety regulations.

What this course could lead to

Students may consider joining longer life-drawing/portrait classes at the college.
