Who is this course for

The course is suitable for anyone wishing to draw or paint from life for a day - life model (unclothed)

What does this course cover

In this one day life drawing workshop, we will take inspiration from eighteenth century British artist, Joshua Reynolds, and his essays, 'Discourses On Art'. Reynolds believed that the power of art comes from the sublime- a sense of magnificence in design, and an artist's biggest trap was to fall into minuteness and small details. The course will put forward some techniques and approaches based on Reynolds' ideas. We will look at his paintings, as well as his influences including Raphael and Michelangelo.

What will it be like

After a brief presentation showing some examples from art history, we will then do a series of short exercises focusing on gestural drawing, dynamic mark making, and composition. The afternoon session will be a long pose giving students a chance to develop their own ideas.
All levels of ability are welcome; this class will give beginners an understanding of gestural drawing that will capture the energy of the figure. Advanced students will be able to think about Reynolds' theories in relation to their own artworks.
Basic materials are available but students are welcome to bring in any mediums for working with. For oil painting, please uses non-odorous substitutes instead of solvents.

What else do you need to buy or do

You will need to bring your choice of paints if using them (any water based or oil based colours) £20 plus supports (canvas, board paper) £20 plus. brushes (nylon or hoghair) £20 plus. Palettes, rags, solvent - 'zest-it' for oil paints.
