Who is this course for
An introduction to making jewellery through making a simple ring. Ideal for beginners but more
experienced students are welcome.
This course is aimed at beginners. Students can enjoy a whole day of jewellery making and get a
feeling for the subject.
What does this course cover
Making a ring out of sheet metal.
The course will cover all the basic jewellery techniques like piercing, soldering, bending, filing,
polishing and also the handling of tools and health and safety aspects of jewellery making.
Have an insight into jewellery making and learn basic jewellery techniques: Piercing out Bending and
shaping metals Filing Polishing Soldering Annealing metal Handling jewellery tools Make at one piece
of jewellery - a ring.
What will it be like
One-to-one dialogue, group discussion, tutor example, explanation and demonstration.
Handouts will be available for the basic techniques and a range of books.
Continuous evaluation is an integral part of the course. This is achieved through one-to-one
discussions between tutor and student. A group discussion will take place at the end of the course.
What else do you need to buy or do
Students can use silver, gold, brass or copper. Costs vary according to projects undertaken. The
college will provide brass and copper.
Beginners who wish to work in silver are advised to buy a 1mm strong silver sheet at least 7cm x 3cm.
