Managing Complex Cases in Community Interpreting

Even experienced and well trained interpreters will find some assignment particularly demanding and this course will give you a chance to develop the more advanced skills needed to handle them. Using fraud investigation cases and child protection scenarios as case study examples, you will be able to develop your skills in assignment-management, handling stressful and confrontational situations and develop your knowledge of complex procedures. We will also look to incorporate the individual areas of development that you have identified as much as possible. Who is this course for

This course is for qualified interpreters who are already working within the Public Services. It is an opportunity for newly qualified and practicing interpreters to share their most difficult experiences with their colleagues and find ways of overcoming them by analysing the events and referring to their Code of Practice
CPD: 12 points. Students will recieve a CPD certificate for 12 guided learning hours on completion of the course.

What does this course cover

By the end of this course students will be able identify and apply ways of managing crowded settings i.e. Case Conferences and recorded settings i.e. Benefits Fraud Investigation as well as different situations they share with the group.
Analysis of different scenarios inc the above mentioned
Interpreter's perspective in relation to Code of Practice
Intervention skills

What will it be like

The course is taught with case studies in groups, role-plays scripted or set up by groups and presented to class and evaluated by the group with a self-assessment to complete at the end of each day. As per the student's discretion role-plays can be recorded and be available for the whole group.

What else do you need to buy or do

There will be handouts for scripted role-plays and case studies that will be provided but students can contribute by sending their questions beforehand so that tutor can incorporate these in the lesson plan as appropriate.
Students can use their smart phones or laptops during role-plays to record the role-plays

What this course could lead to

This course will help interpreters to expand their perspective on situations and improve their skills in managing the challenges. Those who found Case Conferences or Fraud Investigation assignments beyond their competence would feel more confident to perform in these areas
