Who is this course for
This course is for you if you want to improve your skills in using mathematics for work or everyday life. You may wish to gain maths qualifications step by step. This course will make maths real and help you to understand and use maths at work or home. To get on the course, you need to be able to do the simple arithmetic you would normally come across when shopping, working or doing DIY. It is particularly suitable for students who want to work at a slower pace.
What does this course cover
On this course, you will practise:
How to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers
How to use fractions, percentages and decimals
How to measure lengths, weight, capacity, time and temperature
How to calculate with lengths, weight, capacity, time and temperature
How to interpret and use graphs and charts
How to work with ratio and scale
What will it be like
It will be different from the way you learned maths at school. The activities will vary and include discussions, group work, individual work and quizzes, all in a very supportive environment . You will have fun, work hard and get what you put into the course.
You will have lots of individual attention from the tutor as well as the support of your classmates.
What else do you need to buy or do
You will need:
A file to keep your work in
A4 lined paper
You will need to do homework and practise at home. You will also need to have a little spare time to prepare for you exam in the summer.
What this course could lead to
At the end of the course you will decide with your tutor which is the most appropriate next course for you. You may wish to continue to our higher level Brush up your Maths course (L1). Or you might be ready for our evening maths courses, which prepare you for functional skills.
You may also wish to combine this maths course with our other Functional Skills classes in English or ICT, or with ESOL or our digital literacy courses.
The course could also help you prepare for our Payroll or Bookkeeping classes.
