Maths Functional Skills Level 1 & 2
Do you need to improve your maths to help you in
your daily life, with work or your studies? Do you
need to increase your confidence with maths? Do
you need to work towards a GCSE? These courses
will help you gain essential mathematical skills and
also enable you to get a qualification. You will need
to come for an assessment before you start. These
courses are free.
Who is this course for
This course is for students who have successfully completed Maths Skills Level E3 at The Mary Ward Centre or have been assessed as Level 1 students and ready to do Functional Skills. It is a good course to do if you need to prepare for Functional Skills Level 2 or gain a GCSE, but haven't practised maths for a long time.
What does this course cover
This course will present maths in everyday, practical contexts. By the end of the course, you will have covered:
a) Understanding and using whole numbers and negative numbers in practical contexts;
b) Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers using a range of strategies;
c) Understanding and using equivalences between common fractions, decimals and percentages;
d) Adding and subtracting decimals up to two decimal places;
e) Solving simple problems involving ratio
f) Using simple formulae
g) Solving problems requiring calculation involving money, time, length, weight, capacity and temperature;
h) Working out areas and perimeters in practical situations;
i) Constructing geometric diagrams, models and shapes;
j) Extracting and interpreting information from tables, diagrams, charts and graphs;
k) Collecting and recording data and organising and representing information in different ways;
l) Finding mean and range;
n) Using data to assess the likelihood of an outcome.
What will it be like
It will be different from the way you learned maths at school. The activities will vary and include discussions, group work, individual work and quizzes, all in a very supportive environment . You will have fun, work hard and get what you put into the course. There will be a focus on practical maths.
You will have lots of individual attention from the tutor as well as the support of your classmates.

What this course could lead to
After successfully passing this course, you will be ready for Functional Skills Level 2. It will also be good preparation for a GCSE course.
