Module 1: Working Therapeutically With Adolescents
This postgraduate-level series of workshops has been created in response to the new BACP competence framework for counselling Children and Young people, which emphasises a relational way of working. The courses are for qualified counsellors and psychotherapists with at least a Level 4 Diploma in Counselling (or equivalent) who have an interest in working with 11-19 year-olds within the education or charity sector. Each module will consist of a combination of theoretical presentation, experiential learning and presentation of case material. Students who attend with gain a CPD certificate of 6 hours for each course.
Module 1: Working Therapeutically with Adolescents
In this introductory course, we will explore adolescence as a distinct phase of development and consider the challenges of engaging this client group and creative approaches to support the therapeutic process.
Who is this course for
This course is designed for Counsellors with a Level 4 Qualification in Counselling who wish to expand their practise to work therapeutically with Young People Aged between 12 and 18 years old in either an education or agency setting.

Adolescent development and theories of the adolescent process from a sociological and psychological perspective..
The Neuroscience of the Adolescent Brain.
The challenges of engaging the adolescent in counselling.
The needs of different age groups
Creative Strategies for engaging adolescents
By the end of the module participants will have an understanding of the theories of adolescent development as a distinct phase, an understanding of the specific therapeutic needs of this client group and some awareness of strategies for engaging this client group in the therapeutic process.
What will it be like
Course material will be delivered through formal presentation, discussion and experiential work.
The course will have components of casework presentation and practical sessions.
What else do you need to buy or do
Students should bring a notebook and pen. Handouts will be provided. Students will have access to Moodle our online learning tool. A recommended reading/resource list will be given and students will be signposted to additional learning resources/courses.
What this course could lead to
This course is designed as a C.P.D module in its own right or as part of evidence towards the BACP competencies required for Counsellors who have qualified on an adult training to work therapeutically with adolescents within an agency or educational setting. Students who attend will gain a CPD certificate for 6 guided learning hours.
