Module 2: Adolescent Culture

This postgraduate-level series of workshops has been created in response to the new BACP
competence framework for Counselling Children and Young People, which emphasises a relational way of working. The courses are for qualified counsellors and psychotherapists with at least a Level 4 Diploma
in Counselling (or equivalent) who have an interest in working with 11-19 year-olds within the education
or charity sector. Each module will consist of a combination of theoretical presentation, experiential
learning and presentation of case material. Students who attend will gain a CPD certificate of 6 hours for
each course.
Module 2: Adolescent Culture
This course explores the world of the adolescent and the specific challenges faced by this group, looking at the impact of the internet, gang culture, drugs and alcohol as well as school culture and the challenges of working within the education setting. We will introduce case material and creative strategies for working through some of the issues faced by teenagers in todays world.

Who is this course for

This course is designed for Counsellors with a Level 4 Qualification in Counselling who wish to expand their practise to work therapeutically with Young People Aged between 12 and 18 years old in either an education or agency setting.

School Systems and working within them.
Drugs and Alcohol and the adolescent brain
Bullying internet and Cyberbullying
Groups dynamics and Gang Culture
Culture and Diversity
Creative strategies for engaging adolescents

By the end of the module students will have an increased insight into adolescent culture in todays world, challenges faced by this client group specifically and some creative strategies for working through some of the issues faced.

What will it be like

Course material will be delivered through formal presentation, discussion and experiential work.
The course will have components of casework presentation and practical sessions.

What else do you need to buy or do

Students should bring a notebook and pen. Handouts will be provided. Students will have access to Moodle our online learning tool. A recommended reading/resource list will be given and students will be signposted to additional learning resources/courses.

What this course could lead to

This course is designed as a C.P.D module in its own right or as part of evidence towards the BACP competencies required for Counsellors who have qualified on an adult training to work therapeutically with adolescents within an agency or educational setting. Students who attend will gain a CPD certificate for 6 guided learning hours.
