MS Project Introductory

For project management students this course will show you how to develop a plan, assign resources to
tasks, track progress, manage the budget, and analyse workloads. This may be for use in the business or voluntary sector or for personal projects. Those who have already taken a project management course (see Business section) will gain most from taking this course. Before doing this course or to complement it students may also wish to enrol on the Project Management Starter or APM Introductory Certificate in Project Management course.

Who is this course for

This is not a Project Management course but it is for students who may wish to gain knowledge of a program that is used to set up monitor and complete a plan or course of action from beginning to end. Students will get more from this course if they have attended a Project Management Starter course or have completed the APM Project Gantt. Although the student need have no previous experience of MS Project it is desirable to have a working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet programs. It is essential that the student has previous experience of Windows and File management.

All the basic features of starting a project with the software are covered.+ Opening Screen; Create Project file:Project Properties information; Use Calendars; Project Views & Time; Tasks; Task relationships; Milestones: Resources; Assignments; Effort-driven Scheduling; Lead & Lag; Notes; Printing; Cost Totals; Constraints; Critical path; Split Tasks; Task Types; Task Deadlines; Costs; Pay Rates; Resource Allocation; Filters; Reports; Project Baseline; Record scheduled work
By the end of the course you should be able to:
' Open save, use basic tools
' Create Tasks
' Link Tasks
' Consider and use Task Relationships
' Format Gantt Chart
' Create Network Diagrams and Critical Path
' Track a Project

What will it be like

Demonstration using Smartboard through computer-linked projectors, exposition and discussion. One-to-one and Group work. Through tutor-guidance and hands-on experience, the completion of the course objectives.+
Ongoing monitoring of students' work including questions, observation and tasks. Start and End of class student self-assessment/achievement tick sheet.

Teaching methods: Visual demonstration and verbal explanation. Written handouts with visual diagrams. One-to-one teaching. Group discussions
Learning methods: Hands-on practical activities, Reading handouts and following instructions.
One-to-one and group discussion.
How students are assessed: Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
Record of students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives. Practical work produced is evidence of learning.

What else do you need to buy or do

Materials are supplied free of charge by the Centre.+
As much practice as possible to reinforce learning. This may be at home or elsewhere or from homework given by the tutor.
