New: Contemporary Philosophy Of Language And Mind: Robert Brandrom And Analytic Pragmatism
Grand systems of philosophy have not been much in vogue in recent years, particularly in the Anglo-American tradition of philosophy. Perhaps the most notable exception to this trend in the 21st Century has been the work of Robert Brandom. His recent work aims to reconceive and renew pragmatist thought by on the one hand reconnecting it with its roots in the German Idealist tradition, and on the other hand synthesizing it with analytic philosophy of language, epistemology, and metaphysics. This course will provide an introduction to his work, examining debates in the philosophy of language and mind, as well as his synoptic approach to the history of philosophy. Along the way we will discuss Brandoms illuminating readings of other philosophers such as Hegel, Wittgenstein, Frege and Sellars.
