New: Introduction To Haiku

Writing Haiku enables people to become aware of
small experiences in their daily lives and to make
connections between the seemingly unconnected.
It can perform the role of literature and/or
documentary. It has a long tradition in Japan and is
now written by enthusiasts across the globe. For
those wanting to go on to write or who already
write in longer forms, Haiku is good at filtering out
unnecessary words.

Who is this course for

The course is for anyone who wants to learn about haiku and how to write them. Students should have a good standard of reading and writing in English.

What does this course cover

The aims and objectives of the course are for students to have a general understanding of Japanese aesthetics and its application in Japanese haiku, and to trace the development of haiku in English and its relationship to Japanese haiku. By the end of the course students should have the foundations to read and write haiku from an informed position.

What will it be like

The teaching method will include students working individually, in small groups, and as a whole group. There will be some formal teaching (chalk and talk), some experiential learning, and some writing. Assessment of understanding will be ongoing and through each student's participation and production.

What else do you need to buy or do

Students will need pen and paper. Outside of the class students would be expected to write haiku.

What this course could lead to

There are a number of outlets for publication and also the opportunity to take part in competitions. This course could also act as a lever for participants to venture into other forms of Japanese and Western literature.
