New: Style Your Shape

An in-depth look at body shapes, exploring the different block pattern shapes: necklines; dresses; skirts; tops trousers and coats and how these pattern shapes can be used to accentuate or disguise the body shapes. Well also look at where to shop for your shape in store and on-line.

Who is this course for

This course is for those interested in knowing what style and shape of clothing will suit their body type and discovering those high street brands that cater for their body shape. Those with an interest in dressmaking may also find this course useful. The course aims to give students the knowledge to shop with confidence. No previous knowledge is necessary.

What does this course cover

Students will learn about the different pattern shapes for dresses, such as: empire and princess shapes; dropped waist, skater and shift dresses and learn how these shapes can be used to accentuate or disguise different body shapes. Pattern shapes for necklines, skirts, trousers and coats will also be explored.

Students will be shown how to identify their body shape: curved, straight or angular; gain tips on recognising the different pattern shapes to suit their body shape and discover those fashion retailers who cater best for their individual body type.

Student will create their own 'style image board' (using cutting from magazines/newspapers) to use as a template for shopping to suit their style and shape.

What will it be like

There will be a series of lectures with imagery, drawings and demonstrations. Teaching will be supported by practical examples and group discussions. Students will be guided through creating a 'style image board' to support learning and assessing progress. Hand-outs will be given.

What else do you need to buy or do

Students are encouraged to bring pictures of their choosing from magazines/newspapers for their 'style image board' however magazine images will also be provided. A note book and pen will be required.

What this course could lead to

Students may wish to develop their flair for style by researching the various fashion style websites available and seeking out style ideas from newspapers or magazines.
