Photography – Street Photography

This is a photography course which takes you out on the streets to capture scenes of interest to you. During the weeks you will learn about different types of street photography and photographers who have various approaches.

Who is this course for

This course is for people who are familiar with their camera and have a grasp of the basic exposure settings. You will need to have your own camera and have some experience of using it.

What does this course cover

This is not a highly technical course; the focus will be on getting out into the street and learning from direct experience. You will practice different types of street photography and discover your preferred style of shooting. We will look at the work of various street photographers and discuss the different approaches they use. We will also touch on some of the key legal and ethical aspects of street photography.

What will it be like

Usually we will start the lesson at the Mary Ward Centre with a presentation and a briefing on a specific task, then we will go out to photograph at a location somewhere close by. Locations might include: The British Museum, Covent Garden, Oxford Street, St Pancras Station. On occasion we will meet at the location itself and run the entire session from there; e.g. Brick Lane or Canary Wharf.

What else do you need to buy or do

Your camera can be compact, bridge, mirrorless, or DSLR. If you are using a DSLR then ideally, you will have a prime or zoom lens covering a focal length of around 28 or 35mm (full-frame) or around 18 or 24mm (crop sensor). You won't need a flash or tripod for this workshop and we welcome people who prefer to shoot on film providing you know how to expose correctly with your camera. There will be a fair amount of walking involved so you should be reasonably fit. Come prepared for cold or wet weather, bring a warm coat, gloves, etc. A notebook might be useful too.

What this course could lead to

Hopefully you will end up with a selection of great street photographs. The course will help you to develop a street photographer's 'eye' so that you can spot a photo opportunity in an every day street scene. The aim is to build your confidence and conquer your fear of shooting strangers on the street. The practical tasks will help you to develop your powers of observation and learn the art of story-telling through pictures.
