Poetry Workshop

In this supportive class, you will be encouraged to find the best words in the best order, and to utilise methods for testing and teasing language to make spontaneous and innovative structures. The course is designed for students who would like to improve their writing, eventually for an audience online or in print.

Who is this course for

The course is open to anyone with an interest in improving their poetry, and with sharing their ideas in a supportive environment.
You will be encouraged to make new work and to experiment.

What does this course cover

Writing exercises to make new drafts of work for further development;
The close reading of poems; readings of students' drafted poems, with constructive criticism; and at the end of the workshop, short poetry readings.

What will it be like

You will focus on how to write and re-write your poems to better effect.
We will read inspiring poems in class, and give close-readings of those poems to examine to what extent they are successful.
What can we learn from them for our own purposes?

What else do you need to buy or do

Bring pens, paper, enthusiasm, a generous spirit, and a willingness to play.
Handouts and additional materials if required will be provided where necessary.

What this course could lead to

These workshops can lead to you taking your writing life more seriously, with advice on relevant poetry magazines, both in print and online, should you wish to start submitting your work for publication.
