Project Management Certificate (APM)
This course is for people who want skills in project management that could be applied in business or other environments. It is for those wishing to gain a broad understanding of the principles of the profession. It has been developed with materials that are of particular use and relevance to people who work or are involved in the community and voluntary sector although the knowledge gained is applicable to any sector. Final assessment is by a short multiple choice online exam. The course syllabus details are available on the Association for Project Management website www.apm.org.uk. Students may wish to take the Starter course detailed above, prior to the Introductory Certificate and, to complement it, they may also wish to enrol on a project management software course, MS Project on page 19.

Who is this course for
This course is for people who wish to take the first step in learning Project Management. It gives an understanding of the basic philosophy of Project Management and offers an internationally recognised qualification. Students may wish to take the short Project Management Starter course as a prelininary to this course and the Introduction to MS Project computing course afterwards. The content and delivery of this course at the Mary Ward Centre is aimed at people working in Civil Society Organisations but the knowledge and skills gained are transferable.
What does this course cover
Course covers the learning objectives detailed in the APM Introductory Certificate in Project Management Syllabus that is available on the APM website www.apm.org.uk/IntroductoryCertificate.asp
Assessment covers the principles of Project Management including: Planning and Scheduling, Communications, Quality Management, Teamwork, Resource Mnagement, Risk Management, Handover, Review+
Understand the language of Project Management. Understand how a successful project is built. Be part of a Project Management team. Have a proven knowledge of the principles of Project Management
What will it be like
Demonstration using Smartboard through computer-linked projectors, exposition and discussion. One-to-one and Group work. Through tutor-guidance and hands-on experience, the completion of the short online multiple choice examination to gain an internationall recognised certificate+
There will be tests, exercises and reflections during the course and a mock exam prior to the exam
What else do you need to buy or do
Learning materials are supplied on the course. Students might find a flash drive useful. Reading list is available for pre-reading and for consolidating knowledge.
It would be an advantage to make a prior purchase of the APM Body of Knowledge or Starting Out in Project Management available from the Publishing section on www.apm.org.uk+
Students will be expected to go over the areas taught at home. Reading list available from tutors.

What this course could lead to
Membership of the Association for Project Management. Microsoft Project course at the Mary Ward Centre and progress to the next level of Project Management by taking the APMP (IPMA Level D) foundation qualification at UCL Business Centre
