Singing For Absolute Beginners

An introduction to singing for those who sing in the bath or who have just started to find their own voice. Learn to enjoy singing in a group context, and develop a solid singing technique. No previous singing necessary, just a desire to learn more. Come and learn in a friendly and supportive environment.

Who is this course for

For complete beginners as well as those who have some experience but want to expand their repertoire, learn more of the basics of singing and increase general musicality. This course is for anyone who loves to sing but lacks confidence and experience and who wants to learn about and explore their voice in a friendly group setting

What does this course cover

In the course we will cover the basic building blocks of healthy singing, connecting body and mind to the creation of sound. We will explore different ways of singing as well as basic rhythm and harmony work.
The repertoire will cover a wide range of music styles from more traditional to contemporary.

What will it be like

You will learn to listen to your own voice and to others. We will work on breathing, posture and support and we will incorporate different exercises to build strength in the vocal organs. Simple sight-reading skills will be introduced for those unable to read music, and we will learn both through reading music and by ear. There will be the opportunity for an end of course concert for family and friends.

Learning methods: Hands-on practical activities, Reading handouts and following instructions.
One-to-one and group discussion.
Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
Record students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives.Practical work produced is evidence of learning.

Nothing, just come along and enjoy the experience.

What this course could lead to

Other singing classes at Mary Ward Centre such as Love to Sing or the Mary Ward Singers. Choirs at other colleges or organisations. Music Theory courses at the centre or elsewhere.
