Singing For Improvers – Online
New Online singing class for those who enjoy the idea of singing together with other people. This is an intermediate level course where we will delve deeper into good singing technique, explore the connection of body and mind in singing and further develop our own voice. Previous singing experience is required.
Classes will involve some self study and information being sent to you via email.
The course will be run via the zoom platform, please make sure you have installed in in advance of your first class: You can sign up for free here: https://netprog.net/zoomus/zoom.us/pricing.htm
Who is this course for
Ideal for those who have some singing experience, perhaps a couple of terms of the Singing for Beginners at Mary Ward and who are starting to feel more confident in their abilities and are willing to challenge themselves more. We will learn songs both by ear and from music notation, but it is not a prerequisite to be able to read music.
Your Tutor Cecilia grew up in Stockholm, Sweden where she attended one of Sweden's finest music colleges, Stockholms Musik Gymnaisum, specialising in choral singing. Before moving to London she spent many years working at youth camps, working with young people and setting up theatre and music productions.
In London she has continued singing in various choirs, and is currently a member of the six-piece electronic drone choir NYX. NYX makes experimental, experiential, ambient, noise & electronic music, and looks to reshape the role of the traditional female choir.
Cecilia has been teaching at Mary Ward since 2018 and runs a variety of music groups and classes for the college.
What does this course cover
We will focus on healthy singing, as well as explore interpretation, delivery and rhythm. The course covers a range of music styles from more traditional to contemporary, where listening and harmony skills will be at the centre. We will work in session and there will be opportunities for self-study.
What will it be like
The Singing for Improvers course will take place online, via conferencing software app Zoom. You will be able to talk with and see the other members of the class, but the singing will take place predominantly with muted microphones, so you will get used to hearing your own voice! We may at times unmute to sing together, or listen to individual singers.
There will also be video and audio content for you to use in-between the sessions.
There will be weekly activities to give you the opportunity to submit something, audio or writing. We will be working towards recording a song by the end of the six weeks and these + attendance will form the basis of your assessment.
What else do you need to buy or do
You will need to download (free) Zoom software on your computer or mobile device. You will need a microphone (it's fine to use whatever is built in to your device) and preferably use headphones during the session. Also make sure you have a space where you feel free to sing your heart out!
