Sliver Clay And Wirework Jewellery
Work with our expert tutors to make silver clay pieces with wire work additions and connections.
Who is this course for
This course is designed for learners with no previous knowledge of making jewellery with silver clay or wirework. Beginning jewellery makers are welcome as are those with experience with silver clay, wirework or other forms of jewellery making. Most important is a desire to learn and make pieces from these materials.
What does this course cover
During this course learners will learn how to make pieces out of silver clay and use wire wrapping techniques to further add to the design of the piece or to add decorative connections.
By the end of the course students will be able to
Roll out, texture and cut out the clay consistently
Dry and file the clay before firing
Fire your own pieces using a hand-held butane torch
Use wirework techniques to decorate and connect your silver pieces to create your own unique pieces
Polish your piece and ensure it's ready to wear
Learners will make a variety of different pieces including earrings, necklaces and a brooch.

How will I be assessed?
At the start: Self assessment questionnaire
On the course: Through self assessment, peer assessment and tutor assessment
At the end: Through self assessment, peer assessment and tutor assessment
What else do you need to buy or do
Some clay will be provided by the centre. It is possible that you will need to buy additional silver clay (it depends on how large the pieces you make are). You can purchase more silver clay from your tutor at cost price, currently £20.88 for 10g of silver clay (as of February 2018).
No study outside of the class is expected
What this course could lead to
Continue to make more of your own jewellery. Join the other jewellery classes or other art and craft courses at the Mary Ward centre and elsewhere. Progress to an accredited course e.g. the Mary Ward Centre Pre-foundation or Foundation in Art and design courses, or similar at another college. Those with high level skills in jewellery and who are seeking to set up as a practicing professional may wish to progress to the Mary Ward Centre Professional Development for Artists course.
