Speak Your Mind (ESOL L1)

Do you need to improve your fluency, your pronunciation, your vocabulary? Do you want to be able to talk about things other than the weather, your job, family and friends. On this exciting course, you will learn how to express yourself, give your opinions and improve your listening skills by discussing important, controversial subjects.

Who is this course for

This is an intermediate level English course. It is the right course for you if:

You want to develop your speaking and listening skills. You can speak quite well when you go to the shops or a cafe, and when you talk to other learners of English, but your English is functional and you always use the same vocabulary. You want to be able to express yourself better and talk about different topics, give your opinion, and understand higher level conversations amongst friends, native English speakers and on the TV or radio. You also want to improve your pronunciation so that people can understand you and speak more fluently.

You need to develop your grammar and vocabulary to express complicated ideas.

Many students find Level 1 difficult. This course is ideal for helping you make the change from Entry 3 to Level 2.

What does this course cover

The course will cover a variety of topics. You will talk about issues such as falling in love, politics, violence, fashion, religion, culture and music. You will gradually increase your vocabulary and you will learn phrases on how to agree or disagree with someone in a polite or rude manner; how to introduce opinions; how to link ideas. You will practise the verb tenses and different grammar constructions such as various modals (should, must, ought to, have to) and the use of 'if', 'although' and 'wish'.

You will also learn about how to make a formal presentation - including how to structure an argument and give an interesting introduction and conclusion.

What will it be like

The teacher will use YouTube, songs, stories, pictures, recordings and an electronic whiteboard to introduce language. You will read many different texts. You will work in groups, pairs and on your own. There will be a lot of discussion and students will be expected to give their opinions on a variety of topics. You will practise formal and informal conversations, play interactive games and work on various tasks to encourage you to communicate fully.

The teacher will assess your speaking and listening on a regular basis and will talk to you about your progress and what you need to do in order to improve.

What else do you need to buy or do

You need an A4 file, paper, pens and pencils. An English-English dictionary is also useful. Other materials and books are available in the Student Resource Room.

You need to keep a file with all your work in and you need to do homework to ensure you progress as well as you can.

What this course could lead to
