The Forgotten Queens Of Anglo-Saxon England

Can you name Alfred the Great's wife? Which queen was accused of shape-shifting and who died as a beggar in Italy? Come and spend a day learning about England's forgotten queens who lived before 1066.

No prior knowledge is required but a good understanding of English is essential.

4. What does this course cover
Our focus will be on the study of queenship from c.600 to 1066. We will begin by discussing the existing contemporary sources that impact on our knowledge of queens and then look at the careers of several royal women

By the end of the day you will be able to:

' Identify at least 3 Old English queens and their consorts
' Explain why so many Saxon queens have bad reputations
' Discuss how the tenth century reform movement impacted on the status of the queen
' Debate on the purpose of the Encomium of Emma

What will it be like

Teaching will consist of a mixture of PowerPoint presentation, source analysis and class discussion.

What else do you need to buy or do

You need only bring note-taking materials with you on the day. If you wish to do research prior to the course you might listen to the Great Lives episode on Emma of Normandy presented by Matthew Parris in which Vanessa was the 'expert'. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08q5x7l
