Why are you you? Understanding Personality
What is personality? Do we have fixed traits or do we change over time? Where does our sense of self originate from? On this course we will look at how psychology makes sense of personality and self.
Who is this course for
This course is for anyone who likes to consider the big questions in life such as who am I? Why am I this person?
No previous knowledge or experience of psychology is needed. Students may also have attended 'Introduction to Psychology' but this is not mandatory.
What does this course cover
On this course we will consider a number of questions including
- What is personality?
- Does our personality remain constant or change through our life?
- How do we measure personality traits effectively?
- How do we have a sense of self? Where is this located in the brain?
- What and where is consciousness? Is it a myth as some philosophers suggest?
By the end of the course you should be able to define personality, self and consciousness and briefly explain what psychologists understand of these concepts

To benefit fully from this course it is recommended that students complete some of the recommended reading.
What this course could lead to
Students may be interested in doing Biology of Behaviour. Some previous students have gone on to study at a higher level e.g. at Birkbeck.
