Writing Family History

Who is this course for

The course is for anyone wishing to turn research about their family's history into an engaging story. No previous writing experience is needed.

What does this course cover

The course will cover:
- Understanding how to turn facts, history and research into narrative
- How to use narrative techniques and styles to bring people and places to life
- Gaining a sense of structure, as well as the form best suited to family stories
- Raising awareness of aspects of writing, such as dialogue and description, which will help students to develop their projects further

What will it be like

The course will use a mixture of teacher-led discussion, examples, short practical writing exercises, reading out, and constructive feedback from both teacher and students.

What else do you need to buy or do

Beyond pen and paper, no additional materials are needed. With a longer course, students can undertake short, optional writing exercises for sharing in class the following week.

What this course could lead to

The course should give you a sense of how to develop the narrative and dramatic potential of the material you have, and to give you the impetus and confidence to continue to write your family history.
