Your Artist Sketchbook – Mixed Media And Textiles

Draw, paint, collage, print. Inspire your arts/textiles practice by exploring methods to make more of your artist’s sketchbook. Build up your confidence in areas such as visual research and making preparatory drawings and designs to illustrate your ideas for personal projects. Term 1 Approaches to drawing, visual research. Term 2 Colour and pattern-design ideas, monoprints. Term 3 Mixed Media, fabric painting, collage.

Who is this course for

For those with some experience wanting to build on existing skills, inspire individual projects and develop a personal style, support or link to a course, add to your portfolio. Experiment with a range of 2D materials, papers and fabrics to work with, in your sketchbooks, make your own artist book. Work together, in a friendly supportive environment. You can join the course for a term or build up a progression of learning over a year.

What does this course cover

Each term we will cover a different focus for making a creative ideas sketchbook for mixed media, textiles, art projects. Visual research methods-hand drawn, digital. Record and collect visual info. from a range of sources to inspire your practical projects.
Visual Ideas for print, textiles, mixed media artworks. A termly project theme will be provided by the tutor. Students with art/textiles experience, or already working on an individual project may work on a personal theme in agreement with the tutor.

Term 1 Visual Research, Hand drawn, collected info., primary and secondary visual research.. Explore approaches to drawing using a range of media. Drawings from observation and imagination.
Exercises to build up your confidence with fun ways to get used to the practice of using a sketchbook regularly. We will introduce mark making, line, tone, perspective, and expressive qualities of drawing. Experiment with a range of drawing materials and surfaces to draw on. Demystify the drawing process in sketchbook studies.
Term 2 Visual Research, Colour and Pattern. Mood board. Drawings, paintings, print. Explore a selected project theme, experiment with colour mixing and colour range, and develop design ideas, patterns, monoprints, and block prints on paper and fabric in your sketchbooks. Make a cover for your sketchbook from one of your prints.
Term 3 Visual Research, Fabric painting, Collage, Mixed media. Artist book.
We will look at different formats of artist sketchbooks, and how to work in them creatively, with your own drawings, paintings, photos and collage. Explore and experiment with inventive ways to change and transform the structure of the sketchbook via fabric painting, collage, transfer and mixed media methods. The term covers a range of collage methods, layering of different imagery, surface materials including photomontage.

What will it be like

Each session is structured for you to develop your skills in stages of learning, build up your confidence and understanding progressively over the term.
Group teaching and individual 121 tuition is given by the tutor in sessions.
We will discuss the work in progress as a group at the start and end of sessions, with Q+A time.
The tutor will give demonstrations of techniques covered on the course and show samples to the class. Handouts on techniques will be provided.
The tutor will show examples of other artists sketchbooks and ways of working to the group, (digital screen, postcards, books) to extend students' understanding.
The tutor will inform you of art, print and textiles, exhibitions in London to see.
We have an informal mid- term and end of term group review of your projects, to discuss the artworks, share ideas and to help you to build up your critical awareness skills.

What else do you need to buy or do

You will need an A4 or A3 sketchbook at the first session and it would be beneficial to have a basic drawing and painting kit for your own use during the course. The tutor will inform you of suggested materials required at the start of the course.
A suppliers list will be provided at the start of the course. There will be a range of drawing, painting, print and collage materials, tools and equipment available in the class to share.
Homework- sketchbooks studies will be set occasionally, to reinforce your learning between sessions, and is helpful for preparation for the following week.
