This course is aimed at beginners, no experience necessary, or people who have done a little ballroom dancing but are not yet confident in all the dances. It may also be useful for learners returning to ballroom dancing after a break, to recap the basics.
Students will learn a selection of Latin and ballroom basic steps, turns and variations in short sequences. Dances will be performed to strict tempo ballroom music which will be discussed in relation to the style of the dance.
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
1, Recognise and demonstrate the basic step of up to four ballroom and Latin dances.
2, Perform these along with a few simple variations with a partner to music.
Steps will be demonstrated by the tutor for learners to follow as a group before working with partners (optional) to perform to music. The tutor will advise you on styling and timing. The emphasis will be on fun. You are welcome to attend solo or with a partner although we can never guarantee an equal number of leaders and followers. Dancers are encouraged to rotate dance partners in order to enhance their leader and follower skills.
Comfortable clothing and footwear (ballroom, jazz or other soft dance shoes are ideal, or alternatively trainers / plimsolls) are recommended to allow for free movement.
After this course students may be able to continue onto the Improvers Ballroom dance course. The tutor will advise students on the most appropriate course to enrol on after First Steps in Ballroom dance. On completion of this course students will be able to recognise what dances fit to certain pieces of music and therefore dance Ballroom and Latin steps in a social setting.
