This course is aimed at students with some experience of ballroom and Latin dance basic steps. You should have completed a year or more of beginner classes or equivalent and be familiar with terminology such as line of dance, alignment and amounts of turn. You will already be familiar with the basics of most or all of the standard dances and be able to dance fundamental figures such as the natural and reverse turns in the Waltz.
Each term will focus on two standard ballroom and two Latin dances revising the styling, timing and technique and adding new combinations to your repertoire. Dances will be performed to strict tempo music which will be discussed in relation to the style and rhythm of each dance.
By the end of the course you can expect to;
1. Dance a selection of combinations in at least four dances.
2. Understand the importance of timing and learn how to dance in time with the music.
3. Have a good hold and strong frame in order to dance with a partner effectively.
4. Understand the concept of leading and following and give/receive signals to/from a partner.
The tutor will demonstrate basic steps and then of offer helpful feedback on how to improve the execution of the steps whilst you practise.
Partner rotation is encouraged in order to develop leader and follower skills. You do not have to attend with a partner and solo dancers are very welcome but please note we cannot guarantee an even number of leaders and followers. The emphasis will be on social dancing more than syllabus work and your tutor will advise you on styling and timing.
There will be group discussions on the style and feeling of each dance and information will be given on the history and objectives of the dances. Learners will have the opportunity to ask questions regularly both in a group and one-to-one setting.
Students may ask for informal feedback from the tutor at any time.
Comfortable clothing and footwear (ballroom, jazz or other soft dance shoes are ideal, or alternatively trainers / plimsolls) are recommended to allow for free movement.
You may wish to continue the class next term, as the dances and sequences will be rotated and developed for returning learners, or dance socially at local events. Your tutor will advise you of upcoming options.
