  • Course Overview

    Explore and experiment with a range of ceramic techniques specifically for sculpture such as using pottery wheels, slip casting, slab building, coiling, press moulding and simple glazing.

    Those wishing to work with ceramics. An opportunity to try out a range of processes for the making of sculpture in ceramic materials. This will include pottery (wheel thrown), modeling, construction, casting and relevant glazing and colouring techniques for ceramics.

    Focus is on sculpture, pottery, or both - it's up to you!

    Suitable for all levels and those wishing to learn new techniques for making ceramic sculpture.

    The course will introduce you to a variety of processes for making sculpture in ceramic materials.

    These could include:

    - Construction techniques, such as, slab building, coiling, luting, pinch forming;

    - Casting Techniques, such as, slip casting, press moulding, sprig moulding.

    - Glazing and colouring including the use of simple glazes and oxides.

    All these processes can be carried out in a range of clays and can be fired.

    You will explore your sculptural ideas using a range of processes above. You will be encouraged to follow personal projects and the tutor will assist you in developing a project plan.

    By the end of the course you will:

    1. be aware of techniques and a variety of processes for the making of ceramic sculpture.

    2. be able to select appropriate materials and resources.

    3. apply ceramic techniques to make a ceramic sculpture.

    4. be able to work in a more sustained and independent manner towards the completion of a ceramic sculpture.

  • What will it be like?

    The course is delivered by a practising ceramic sculptor. There will be individual tuition and group work. Practical demonstrations will be given to groups and individuals. You can pursue your own projects and interests or follow the projects offered. You will gain verbal feedback throughout classes on technical and aesthetic aspects to enable you to progress your project and ideas. At the end of each term we will discuss projects with the group.

    We may make a visit to a relevant gallery in one session.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    We charge a small amount for clay and firing beyond an allotted amount. Most basic materials and equipment are supplied. Some students, however, may wish to purchase special clays. It is also recommended that you begin to build up your own collection of modelling and other hand tools. Advice on selecting materials and building up a tool kit and purchasing, will be given by the tutor. Costs in the region of five pounds to twenty five pounds.

    Students should wear stout shoes and bring an apron or old shirt, sculpture can be messy, and dusty.

    Space is limited, so works can't be too large and there is a 7kg weight restriction.

    It is helpful to visit galleries and museums outside of class time to develop an awareness of contemporary art and particularly of ceramic sculpture being exhibited. This knowledge is shared with the group in regular discussions. A willingness to gather resource materials and develop ideas will enrich your work.
