Carving

  • Who is it for?

The course is suitable for people of all levels of experience who have an interest in sculpture and carving. Sculpture manifests an enormous diversity of forms and can mean many things to many people, and the course benefits from the mixed abilities and diversity within the group.

  • What does it cover?

This course offers a formal introduction to all basic techniques materials and processes of carving in wood. Inspiration will be drawn from imagination and/or observation of natural forms and the work of other artists.
The tutor will suggest projects and discuss ideas for works when appropriate.
Students will develop spatial, proportional and visual awareness. Explore methods of composition to include accurate observation, drawing for sculpture, measuring techniques and construction of maquettes in clay. The centre provides relatively small pieces of lime wood or jelutong, included in the course fees. Students who wish to use different carving wood need to purchase their own.

  • What will it be like?

The course will be taught through demonstration, practice and discussion with particular emphasis on sound and careful technique to ensure a strong and successful end result.
The tutor will divide their time equally amongst all the students in the class.
Students' work will be regularly recorded with photographs, written progress reports, copies of sketchbooks, Blogs or other documentation.
Assessment is given on a regular basis by direct personal consultation with the tutor, and reference to project records.
Each student is expected to identify where possible specific learning aims and objectives to be assessed at the end of the term.
Students will be encouraged to evaluate their own work through group discussion with fellow students and self-appraisal.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Costs will vary according to materials chosen, which whenever possible will be provided by the Centre at a cost. Carving tools cost approx £15.00 each, should you wish to buy your own.
Whatever is appropriate for the individual goals/course plan. Students will be able to work at their own pace but where extra work is needed (say for portfolio preparation) they will be expected to do more. Space is limited, so works can't be too large and there is a 7kg weight restriction.

You will need a sketchbook and drawing materials,
If possible, bring a cardboard folder to file and save handouts; a camera or phone camera- to record progression of work. Should a camera be difficult to access bring a memory stick if you can. For the first day on the course, bring a photo or print of a figure or animal or form you find inspiring. Your tutor will provide some images and ideas as back up.

Students are asked to bring their own protective clothing such as an old shirt, overall or apron to wear in the studio, to remove and wash between sessions. A small personal hand towel is also required. Before and after using any shared tools, students will be asked to wash their hands. We strongly advice that you bring and wear a face protector, such as a face mask. When in the workshop, we recommend to wear strong shoes or boots
All work created on the course need to be sufficiently small to be carried and stored by the student without assistance through a second person.
