  • Course Overview

This course is aimed at Advanced learners who have completed Clothes-making beginners and Clothes-making Improvers courses and would like to develop their skills further. New learners with significant previous experience and skills can also apply. This course will give you the basis to continue on to further courses in fashion/clothes-making.

You will learn the necessary skills to:

Produce samples of some advanced techniques.

To collate fabric swatches and understand fabric composition.

Take accurate body measurements and compare to pattern to select size.

Produce a garment using a commercial pattern (this will be discussed with your tutor at the beginning of the course) N.B. This course does not include pattern making.

Select an appropriate fabric for the chosen pattern.

    Interpret and read pattern instructions

Cut out and lay up the pattern correctly

Sew a garment whilst using a range of sewing techniques incorporating health and safety good practice.

It is strongly recommended learners complete the Improvers course first before continuing on the Clothes-making Advanced course or those that have previous knowledge of sewing clothes and would like to develop those skills to a higher standard.

You must be able to take notes. Reasonably good hand-eye coordination is also necessary.

Please note: This course is not run as a workshop, and learners will be expected to follow the course programme and tutor set projects. Learners must attend regularly to ensure progress.

You will need to follow the tutor's instructions on health & safety procedures and use a sewing machine, iron and sewing equipment safely.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

Your tutor will advise in the first lesson of what equipment to purchase. Sewing machines and some basic equipment is provided. However, learners will be expected to purchase their own sewing kit, consisting of a measuring tape, pins, scissors, sewing needles, threads and marking chalk. Whatever garment you make, you will need to buy a pattern, fabric, trimmings, threads and all the equipment needed to complete it, this will vary depending on the fabric and pattern purchased.

  • What could it lead to?

You will be encouraged to register for one of our masterclasses that will enable you to develop skills in specific techniques used in Clothes-making.
