In this two day course we will make one adult leg sized reusable Christmas stocking from handmade felt. The piece will then be patterned with further needle felting, embroidery, beads or sequins to create an intricately patterned and personalised piece.
Felt is a biodegradable material, made using an ancient non-woven textile technique which involves matting woollen fibres to create a dense compacted structure.
The session will include:-
An exploration of the unique properties of wool
Using the wet felting method to create a 3D form
Adding needle felted designs to the felt
Embellishing the stocking with embroidery, beads and sequins
Felting is an easy process, making it suitable for both beginners to the technique, and those with more experience wishing to learn more about creating 3D forms with this versatile material.
In the first session we will create a template, then layout the wool fibres and before felting them together to create a firm three dimensional shape. If there is enough time and materials, further smaller stockings can be made. The second session will focus on adding patterns through needle felting and simple embroidery stitches, with the option to add beads and sequins for extra texture and sparkle.
We will provide the basic materials and equipment for the course.
Please also bring: -
A large plastic or melamine dinner tray to make the felt
A sturdy tub or jug to hold water
Soap
A bath sponge
A 30x60cm piece of bubble wrap
A waterproof apron
Nitrile gloves if your hands a likely to be sensitive to the soap
Towel to dry hands
A waterproof carrier bag to transport your wet felt home
Embroidery threads, plus a basic sewing kit, such as needles, scissors, pins and a pin cushion
Sequins, beads, ribbons and other embellishments to add to your stocking
Enrol on the Creative Felting with Embroidery (AD0650), or other felting, embroidery and textile classes to develop your skills further.
