Embroidery Online

  • Who is it for?

This class is open to anyone who has a passion for textiles and would like to develop their creative ability through the art of stitch. No previous experience is necessary and students will learn new skills focusing on their particular requirements. Experimentation is key as students learn to build their own stitch vocabulary.

  • What does it cover?

The course provides an opportunity to learn and practice a variety of hand embroidery stitches and how to be creative with them. First time students will be introduced to a range of simple stitches. Once these are mastered students will be encouraged to be more experimental with the size and spacing of stitches to explore the different types of marks that can be made and the potential of each stitch. Two or three stitches will be introduced each session. A slow mindful approach to stitching will be encouraged.
After producing a range of samples students will do a self-initiated project, encouraging them to develop their own designs and be experimental with their stitch ideas.
Students will also be introduced to the work of relevant textile artists/designers and will be informed of any exhibitions that might be of interest.

By the end of the course you should be able to:

    1. Produce stitched textile samples incorporating a range of stitches.
    2. Have a wider knowledge and understanding of artists and designers that work in stitch.
    3. Demonstrate the ability to explore your own individual creativity.
    4. Gather and collate your own reference material that will lead to a self-initiated project.
    6. Reflect on and evaluate your own work and that of others.

  • What will it be like?

Teaching methods: Visual demonstration and verbal explanation. Written handouts with visual diagrams. One-to-one teaching. Group discussions
Learning methods: Hands-on practical activities, Reading handouts and following instructions.
    One-to-one and group discussion.
How students are assessed: Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching.
Record of students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives. Practical work produced is evidence of learning.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    Materials list
    1. Fabric - medium weight calico, but it would be good to have a range of different natural fabrics so that you experiment stitching on different types/weights/textures.
    2. Embroidery hoop.
    3. Different sized needles (sharps or embroidery/crewel would be best).
    4. DMC or Anchor stranded embroidery cotton (selection of colours).
    5. Embroidery scissors.

You will be expected to finish samples started in class for homework.

The course will be run on Zoom, please make sure you have installed it in advance of your first class on your computer or mobile device. You can sign up for free here:

You will need a microphone (it's fine to use whatever is built into your device) and camera, so we can see you via video. You may also want to use headphones during the session.
You can participate in class sessions through the use of a computer, laptop, tablet or other similar internet enabled device. Please note that if you only have access to a smartphone, you will be able to attend the class sessions and participate in them but you will find it more difficult to benefit from the full range of materials and activities involved in the course if this is your only means of connection.

Make sure you have a small space to work in during the session and that as far as possible that you can keep this space quiet and clear of interruption so that you can concentrate on what is happening in the class.

By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may occasionally be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes but any such recordings will not be made available to anyone outside of the Mary Ward Centre organisation without us asking you again for further permission to do so.

  • What could it lead to?

This course could lead to other textile courses at the Mary Ward Centre or another further education college. Foundation or Pre-foundation course at the Mary Ward Centre, Textiles courses at the Mary Ward Centre, Textile courses at other institutions, City and Guilds creative studies embroidery. The student could take a follow up short course or a longer term or year long course. It could also inspire self-initiated projects.
