ESOL E2 Elementary

This course is for people who can have some conversations and read and write short letters, emails and forms in English, but only at a very simple level. On the course, you will learn more vocabulary and grammar to help you talk, read and write about more interesting things and make fewer mistakes.
  • Who is it for?

This course is at elementary level. It is the right course for you if:

You can speak a little bit and understand some conversations. You can ask and answer simple questions and talk a little about yourself and friends. You can go the shops, use transport and make appointments. But you can only say and understand simple words and you cannot express yourself very well.

You can read and understand simple forms, emails and messages, but you cannot read anything complicated or interesting!

You can write simple sentences about yourself, friends and places. You can write a short email to friends. You can fill in simple forms. But you cannot write long sentences or paragraphs.

You need to learn more words, speak more fluently, and improve your grammar. You need to learn about the tenses and make fewer mistakes in your speaking and writing.

  • What does it cover?

In this course, you will improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing. You will speak, listen, read and write about:
    - yourself, your family, your friends,
    - what you like and don't like
    - life in the UK and in other countries and cultures
    - your past life and your future plans.

You will learn more vocabulary about people, places, and things. You will practise your grammar - including your use of adjectives, nouns, and verb tenses, for example, the present simple, past simple, present continuous and the future.

You will practise your pronunciation so you can speak more clearly to friends, neighbours and people in shops and offices. You will feel more confident with your English and will understand more conversations.

You will prepare for the ESOL E2 speaking and listening, reading and writing exams.

  • What will it be like?

Some sessions on this course will be run online using Zoom, other sessions will be in the classroom.

The teacher will use videos, YouTube, songs, stories, pictures, recordings and an electronic whiteboard to introduce language. You will work in groups, pairs and on your own. There will be a lot of speaking and listening. You will discuss many topics, practise conversations and, play games. You will read many different stories and articles, and use maps and diagrams. You will write stories, emails and letters. There will be many different activities so that you understand everything and are never bored!

The teacher will talk often to you about your progress. You will do activities and some tests to help the tutor tell you about your progress.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

The course will be run on Zoom, please make sure you have installed it in advance of your first class on your computer or mobile device. You can sign up for free here:

You will need a microphone and camera, so we can see you via video, but your phone, tablet or computer will probably have one. You can use headphones during the session if you want to.

Please note that if you used you might not be able to do everything in the session.

Make a small space to work in quiet so that you can concentrate on what is happening in the class.

By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may occasionally be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes but any such recordings will not be made available to anyone outside of the Mary Ward Centre organisation without us asking you asking you again for further permission to do so.

You need an A4 file, paper, pens and pencils. An English-English dictionary is also useful. Other materials and books are available in the Student Resource Room.
You need to keep a file with all your work in. You need to do homework and come to class every lesson. You need to prepare for your exams. You will need to prepare for these and attend any extra preparation classes recommended by your tutor.

  • What could it lead to?

There are exams in December, April and July. Students take Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing exams. When you have passed all exams at Entry 2, you can go to Entry 3. If you are not ready to pass the exams, you can repeat Entry 2.
