ESOL E3 PRE INTERMEDIATE

At this level, you feel quite confident about your English. You can go to shops, travel, have conversations about everyday topics, read simple newspaper articles and write letters and emails. But you still cannot speak or read about anything complicated and you make quite a lot of mistakes. On this course, you will practise your vocabulary and grammar so you can understand people better, talk about most everyday topics, write an interesting letter or email and make fewer mistakes.
  • Who is it for?

This English course is at pre-intermediate and lower intermediate level. It is the right course for you if:

You can communicate with people in different situations and feel quite confident in your daily life - for example, in shops, at the bank, at the market, with your children's teacher. But you cannot say or understand anything complicated. You cannot understand the television or the radio very well especially when English people are talking to each other.

You can read simple letters, emails, and forms quite easily. You have begun to read newspaper articles and stories. But you need to use a dictionary a lot and the stories take you a long time to read.

You can write short letters and emails. You can write descriptions of people and places. You can write about how you feel. But you make a lot of mistakes. You are not sure about the correct grammar, and your language is quite simple.

  • What does it cover?

In this course, you will practise your speaking, listening, reading and writing.

You will practise everyday conversations - giving opinions and advice, expressing what you like and don't like doing, making plans for the future, asking and answering questions. You will develop your pronunciation so you know which words to stress. You will practise your listening in conversations and your listening to recordings - for example, from the radio and television.

You will improve your reading skills so you can understand short newspaper articles and stories, most forms and notices and formal and informal letters.

You will develop your writing. You will practise writing formal and informal letters, more detailed descriptions of places and people, short creative stories and giving your opinions.

You will learn more grammar. You will practise the present continuous, 'going to' and 'will' for the future; the present perfect; past continuous; some modal verbs such as should/shouldn't, must/mustn't, have to/don't have to, may, might. You will learn more about comparatives and superlatives, adverbs, pronouns, and much more. You will also learn a lot of vocabulary.

You will study for the ESOL Entry 3, speaking and listening, reading and writing exams.

  • What will it be like?

Some sessions on this course will be run online using Zoom, other sessions will be in the classroom.

The teacher will use videos, YouTube, songs, stories, pictures, recordings and an electronic whiteboard to introduce language. You will work in groups, pairs and on your own. There will be a lot of speaking and listening. You will discuss many topics, practise conversations and play games. You will read many different stories and article about different topics. You will write stories, emails and letters. There will be many different activities so that you understand everything and are never bored!

The teacher will assess your speaking, listening, reading and writing by giving you activities to do and some tests. The teacher will talk often to you about your progress.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

The course will be run on Zoom, please make sure you have installed it in advance of your first class on your computer or mobile device. You can sign up for free here:

You will need a microphone and camera, so we can see you via video, but your phone, tablet or computer will probably have one. You can use headphones during the session if you want to.

Please note that if you used you might not be able to do everything in the session.

Make a small space to work in quiet so that you can concentrate on what is happening in the class.

By signing up to the course you are consenting to being on camera. The content of the lesson may occasionally be recorded by the tutor for internal education and training purposes but any such recordings will not be made available to anyone outside of the Mary Ward Centre organisation without us asking you asking you again for further permission to do so.

ESOL L1 Intermediate

This is the level at which you start to be a competent English speaker and writer. You can now communicate quite easily in your daily life especially in practical issues. But you need to develop your language to talk and write about more complicated subjects and to help you with your work. On this course, you will focus on reading more challenging texts and writing about them. You will learn how to make a presentation, write formally and informally, and by the end of the course you will understand and use accurately the most common English grammar.
