Essential Digital Skills - Entry Level 3

Do you need to know how to use Computers and IT in your everyday life? Do you feel left behind by your lack of knowledge? This starter qualification is designed for those who have a limited knowledge of using computers and is designed to give you basic skills to help you with work and daily life. To enrol on to this course, you will need to book in and attend one of our Advice and Information sessions. Please email admin@marywardcentre.ac.uk or call 020 7269 6000 to book Wednesday 8th and Monday 13th September in Mary Ward Centre 10.30-3pm Thursday 9th and Friday 17th September in Blackfriars settlement 10.30-3pm There will be regular advice and assessment sessions Wednesdays at Queens Square and Thursday at Blackfriars throughout the year: www.marywardcentre.ac.uk/about/advice-and-support Please note: 5003 is a daytime course, 5002 is an evening course. They will take place at Blackfriars Settlement, Rushworth Street, SE1 0RB.
  • Who is it for?

    This starter qualification is designed for those who have a limited knowledge of using computers and would like to gain a qualification. It not for complete beginners.
    You will need access to a computer to practice on between classes and to complete your homework.
    Students must be committed to attend the whole course, complete homework, assignments and take the unit exams.
    Please ensure you have at least E3/L1 English/ESOL.

  • What does it cover?

    It is tutor-led throughout and is designed to build confidence and build computing skills, knowledge and understanding. The main areas covered are:

    - Using Devices and handling information
    Using the screen, keyboard and mouse.
    Understanding different types of digital devices.
    Understanding IT the terms including: Hardware, Software, Operating System and Applications

    - Creating and editing
    Understanding how to store and access your files.
    Understanding how to Download, create, edit, format and save word processing documents.

    - Communicating
    Using email to receive and send messages and attachments.
    Making and participate in Video calls and Zoom call

    - Transacting
    Completing and submitting online forms.
    Using the web to search for and buy items online.

    - Being safe and responsible online
    Being aware of security risks of being online.
    Protecting personal information.

    To pass the course you will need you will take two online tests and have regularly submit homework to your tutor via email or Moodle.

  • What will it be like?

    Teaching methods: Visual demonstration and verbal explanation
    Learning methods: Hands-on practical activities, mostly using Windows 10 PCs,
    Reading handouts, online tutorials, and following instructions to complete exercises.
    One-to-one and group discussion.

    How students are assessed: Questions and answers during group discussions and one-to-one teaching. Sharing techniques/achievements in their work via zoom/ in class displays/discussion. Students practice their learning doing exercises which requires them to submit the work via email to the Tutor.
    Record of students' progress and achievement on an assessment sheet as they achieve the course objectives.
    You will need to take two online, onscreen tests to gain this qualification.

  • What else do I need to buy or do?

    You will need an access to a computer or laptop to practice Office and to do your homework.
    Homework will be regally set is will form part of the qualification
    Materials are supplied free of charge by the Centre, but you are advised to bring a memory stick to save their work.

  • What could it lead to?

    Essential Digital Skills L1
    Level 1 Award in IT User Skills (ECDL Essentials) (ITQ)

    Further Study with Mary Ward Centre.
    Advice will be given by your tutor and you can visit or regular Advice and Guidance sessions for an assessment at Mary Ward Centre and Blackfriars Settlement.

Level 1 Award in IT User Skills (ICDL Essentials) (ITQ)

Do you need to improve your digital skills to help you in your job or to find work? This qualification is for aimed at students who have some knowledge of using computers. It is designed for to improve your IT skills required for the modern workplace. The course will focus on three key programs used in employment: Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Upon successful completion of three online exams, you receive the BCS Level 1 Award in IT User Skills (ICDL Essentials) (ITQ). ( Formally known as ECDL) To enrol on to this course, you will need to book in and attend one of our Advice and Information sessions.
